Kenya vs Tanzania Safari: Which Country Should You Choose in 2026?

Kenya is more compact, easier, and better for first-timers. Tanzania is more spectacular, more spread out, and better for the Migration. Combining both is the move if you have 10+ days.

Kenya and Tanzania are the two great East African safari countries. Both have the Big Five, the Great Migration, world-class guides, and excellent accommodation. The differences are real but subtle, and most safari-goers end up choosing based on the specific parks they want to see, the time of year they're travelling, and how much time they have.

Choose Kenya if:

  • This is your first safari
  • You have 5–7 days only
  • You want the Mara specifically (river crossings, the iconic imagery)
  • You want the easiest logistics (Nairobi direct, short drives)
  • You want to combine with a beach (Mombasa, Diani, Watamu)

Choose Tanzania if:

  • You have 10+ days
  • The Migration is the main goal (Serengeti offers more viewing windows)
  • You want to climb Kilimanjaro
  • You want Zanzibar
  • You want the Ngorongoro Crater
  • You want a less crowded safari experience

Combining Both

If you have 10–14 days, the most popular and most rewarding safari itinerary in East Africa is the Kenya + Tanzania Migration combination. Spend 4 nights in the Mara, fly to the Serengeti for 4 nights (focused on the Migration in the area it currently is), and end with 2–3 nights in Zanzibar. The cross-border logistics are well-trodden — most safari operators handle it seamlessly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Kenya or Tanzania for the Migration?

Tanzania's Serengeti offers the Migration for more months of the year (calving Jan–Feb in the south, crossings Aug–Sep in the north). Kenya's Mara offers the crossings from one place during a 3-month window. If you have a fixed date in August or September, both work. If your dates are flexible, Tanzania gives you more options.

Frequently asked

Is Kenya or Tanzania better for a first safari?

Kenya. More compact, easier logistics from Nairobi, generally lower cost, and a wider range of ecosystems. Tanzania is better for the second safari.

How much does a Kenya + Tanzania safari cost?

In 2026, a 12-night combined private safari (4 Mara, 4 Serengeti, 3 Zanzibar) is $9,000–$14,000 per person. A 10-night combined safari without the beach is $7,500–$12,000 per person.

Can I see the Migration in both countries?

Yes. The Mara and northern Serengeti are part of the same ecosystem — the herds cross the border. A combined safari in August–September puts you on both sides of the river.
